NewryWAN
is a non-profit community group dedicated to creating &
maintaining a high speed wireless computer network that will
cover much of Newry City.
We are part of IRISHWAN,
the Irish community wireless group which also includes groups
with similar aims from other parts of Ireland. Groups are up
and running in Dublin, Wexford, Limerick, Galway, Belfast and
of course Newry in the near future. Networks are also up and
running all over the UK and across the world. We set up these
networks using Wireless LAN technology (also known as wifi or
802.11b) which is readily & cheaply available and in no
way requires a license to operate. Check out
for info on a US group thats been going for some time or ,
a Cardiff based group which has managed to cover most of the
city
Our mission is to create a network which is open and free to
everyone. The network can provide high speed internet access,
Voice over IP (free phone calls), community web sites &
e-learning facilities. This can be of great benefit to remote,
rural & disadvantaged areas that can't afford or don't have
access to a permanent internet connection.
Some of our members have worked extensively in the past within
the IT industry specialising in areas such as networking, internet
development & security. We believe we have the experience
& knowledge to install a community based wireless computer
network for Newry & Mourne
