Wireless
LAN cards : Connect to your laptop computer or your
PC (as long as you have an adapter that accepts the PCMCIA card)
As mentioned before, these are available from any good PC shop.
If you wish we can purchase any of the equipment below on your
behalf. We recommend the 'Orinoco' wireless cards as these give
better range and performance
Wireless
Access Point : This connects to your PC and acts as
an access point client (connecting to a network) or access point
(providing network connectivity). Access Points can also be
used to create a 'bridge' between different networks. You can
use an access point instead of a wireless card or to set up
a node for other people to access
Directional
Antenna : Can provide connections over longer distances
and improves signal quality. The type shown is a 'Yagi' style
antenna, but many others are available. Directional antennas
usually provide a range of between 3 > 10km, but greater
distances have been achieved by using parabolic or Mesh / MMDS
style antennas, although you can easily exceed the 100 MilliWatt
transmit threshold by using one.
Omni-Directional
Antenna : This is used to provide a signal over a greater
area, most usually through 180 or 360 degrees. When you connect
to the NewryWAN network you will most likley be receiving your
signal from one of these. Used mainly in setting up a node
Pigtail
Cable : A Pigtail is used to connect your wireless
card or access point to a suitable antenna or to another cable.
It is usually 'low loss' cable that is used as signal strength
can quickly decline when using anything in the 2.4Ghz range
This is only a handful of the equipment currently available
for wireless networking. Check out

Bessbrook Backbone Link
A test link from Bessbrook > Newry has been installed. This
is a backbone link to handle internet bound data for the many
Bessbrook clients that will be connecting to the rest of the
network
